Why you should go to an interview prepared to fail - Debut
Why you should go to an interview prepared to fail - Debut This piece was written by our resident writer Alex Ekong. Read on for his thoughts on how how we should reasess our interview expectations: Success. A lot is made of success and successful people. Every profile of a self-made multi-millionaire is a rose-tinted picture of having a dream and making it reality in the face of adversity. And that adversity is only ever mentioned in passing. Itâs cute, sure. But hackneyed stories about how Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg were college dropouts and how Steve Jobs was once fired from the company he founded simply arenât going to blanket-motivate us any more. We all have different influences. We all have different heroes. When I need to make sense of the world, I turn to my lord and saviour Hollywood. A large part of my personality is based on my ability to flawlessly recite Simpsons quotes, grime lyrics and cult films. Hereâs a quote by Fight Clubs Tyler Durden that struck me: Image via Giphy This really resonated with me. Particularly as I was transitioning from the relative frying pan of final year at university to the proverbial flame grill of the job hunt gulp. Here was Tyler Durden, the roguish anti-hero at the center of David Fincherâs 1999 cult hit Fight Club (a strangely useful film for careers.) Hes a degenerate thief and domestic terrorist living in a dilapidated house in the toxic waste part of a major American city. By all rights, Tyler is an abject failure (albeit ably portrayed by a young, impossibly chiseled Brad Pitt.) Image via 20th Century Fox Although both hallmarks of the go-go 1990s, suffice to say Tyler Durden seems a very different beast to Bill Gates. But in truth, theyâre two sides of the same coin. Tyler applied his anti-success rhetoric to blowing up your worldly possessions, peeing in soups and burning peopleâs hands with lye. But he inadvertently taught us an important lesson. If I may bastardise another Durden-ism: itâs important to know not fear know that youâre going to make mistakes. Two things happens when you do: You make better plans Image via Giphy Even the best of us mess up. Itâs human and we canât help it. Master manipulator Tyler, however, always knew what was next for Project Mayhem even if no-one else did. This is the key. The sooner you embrace the inevitability of messing up, the sooner you can plan for it. You line up your interviews, careers events, networking opportunities and keep your options open. You aim to do something every day that gets you to where you want to go. Organising all of this doesnât even have to take all that long. In fact, the Muse says you can do it in 10 hours. That way, you never blow your interview without having something in the pipeline that keeps you moving. And even if you do blow it, remember Robert Allenâs sage words. âThere is no failure, only feedbackâ. You either win or you learn and if you donât win, your plans become sharper the next time around. You get a newfound confidence Letâs be real here. The people that think theyâre crazy enough to change the world are usually the ones that do, whether itâs making a splash in the careers world or destroying a financial district to restore the world to a primitive hunter-gatherer society. Image via Giphy Being prepared to fail means approaching careers challenges with the kind of unabashed bravery that comes with having nothing to lose. You definitely start believing that nothing is too big or too small, too far or too near for you to try. In fact, the Guardianâs Graham Snowdon believes that casting your net wide and applying to unconventional places is the tonic for long, arduous job search. What better way to test your fledgling sense of fearlessness? If youre still hitting walls, American entrepreneur Bill Ellermeyer recommends you to take time out to reassess. âDonât take your downers to the outside world,â he advises. In that time, you can round out your personality with some hobbies. Firms, after all, love to hire people as opposed to drones. Be more than a worker, be a resource. Itâs just like Tyler said: Youâre not your job. Image via Giphy So basically Thatâs why you should go to an interview prepared to fail. Because with every setback comes experience and you donât want to die without any scars. If youâve just graduated, youâre at a point where thereâs endless possibilities laid out in front of you. At this point, failure doesnât lead to a dead end but another path, another glowing opportunity. With the right codes and keys, thereâs nothing to stop you seizing that opportunity. Thereâs your epiphany. You didnât even have to get knocked out in a basement to get it. The Richest K-Pop Groups, Including BTS and More
The Richest K-Pop Groups, Including BTS and More K-pop is suddenly a bigger business than ever. Korean pop musicâ"usually referred to by its shorthand, âK-popââ"has been reliably commercial across East Asia for years, but itâs only more recently become a global moneymaker. âWeâre at a really exciting turning point. A lot more American record labels and American brands and companies are looking to see how they can tap into these artists,â says music journalist and Billboard K-pop columnist Jeff Benjamin. Global brands have already gotten in on the action, with Hyundai and Samsung striking deals with K-pop superstars. Meanwhile, American listeners are responding in droves: In 2018, leading K-pop acts began edging their way onto American sales charts alongside the likes of Drake, Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran, making them crossover stars in a way theyâve never been before. Benjamin broke down his ranking of the richest groups in K-pop right now based on various income streams and available figures. Here are the 9 richest K-pop bands who are making major moves. 9. Got7 Getty Images This boy band is made up of multinational members from South Korea, the U.S., Thailand, and Hong Kong. This might help explain the groupâs wide appeal across continents. âTheyâve reached all over Asia and America,â Benjamin says. âThey played Barclays Center [in Brooklyn] and The Forum [in Los Angeles] last year. They have strong album sales and OK endorsement deals.â Got7 had a winning streak on the Gaon album chart in 2018 (Gaon is more or less the equivalent of Billboard in South Korea). Touring is essential to any working musicianâs income, and the bandâs ability to touch down globally has been key to its rise. 8. Red Velvet Han Myung-Gu, Getty Images K-pop girl groups, unfortunately, often donât have it as easy as their male counterparts. âThereâs this kind of unwritten rule in K-pop Iâm still trying to understand where male acts earn more from album sales and touring, and female acts tend to make most of their money from endorsement deals,â Benjamin says. Red Velvet has been nailing it on the endorsement front. Lead singer Irene has signed deals as a spokesperson for Maxwell House coffee and contact lens maker Cooper Vision. And Red Velvet has been really good at sustaining overseas interest, Benjamin adds. Its single âBad Boyâ reached No. 18 among K-pop acts on Billboardâs 2018 World Digital Songs sales chart. 7. Wanna One Getty Images Even though they technically âdisbandedâ at the beginning of the year, Wanna One made their collective time in the spotlight fruitful with strong endorsement deals and major sales. âThey were a temporary group,â says Benjamin, but that didnât stop their only studio album 1 ¹ ¹=1 (Power of Destiny) from reaching a career high in 2018, selling 438,000 physical copies in just its first week. That would be an astounding figure in the U.S.â"a much bigger country than South Koreaâ"but as Benjamin explains, South Korea still has an amazing culture of buying physical CDs, which are sold âmore like books with intricate album packaging and all these photos.â 6. Seventeen Getty Images Seventeen is another boy band (with, somewhat confusingly, 13 members) that has pushed beyond selling records. Theyâve entered the all-important beauty market, becoming models for the cosmetics brand Saem. And theyâve made inroads beyond their homeland: The groupâs Japanese debut in 2018 managed to hit the top of the countryâs daily album charts. Theyâve also toured extensively. 5. EXO Shutter Stock EXO (pronounced âXOâ) knows how to sell records. In addition to brand deals, their âreally high album sales,â as Benjamin says, have buoyed them across the world. They have Korean and Chinese members and sing in Korean as well as Mandarin. The nine-member groupâs 2018 album Donât Mess Up My Tempo hit No. 5 among K-pop acts on Billboardâs World Albums chart. And appetite is high: Their concert tickets have gone for up to $1,400 on the online secondary market, according to the South China Morning Post. 4. TVXQ Alamy Stock Photo TVXQ is more or less The Eagles of K-pop. âTheyâre a veteran act,â says Benjamin, and while that doesnât come with the perks of being the hot new thing, âtheyâre legends in Japan. They bring in so much money for a small number of concerts.â While âthey donât sell as much as they used to,â their ability to tap into the massive touring market in Asia has allowed them to continually rake in huge piles of cash. In Japan, the second-largest music market behind the U.S., TVXQ set a record by selling one million tickets for its tour last year. 3. Blackpink Getty Images While Blackpink âdoesnât have album sales as strongâ as some of the competition, Benjamin notes, the girl group tours extensively, and has Western appeal: Theyâre preparing for an American tour in 2019 that will include the all-important stadiums. And their wide-ranging appeal in Japan has only boosted their revenue streams. 2. Twice Getty Images Twice are the reigning queens of K-pop. While album sales tend to be softer for girl groups, the act has proved the exception. Theyâve also latched onto prolific endorsement deals, from video games to uniforms toâ¦a chicken franchise. This year looks to be a repeat of their success. âTheyâre about to have the first stadium tour in Japan for a K-pop girl group,â Benjamin adds. 1. BTS Photo Illustration by Lixia Guo; Steve Granitzâ"Getty Images If youâve heard of one K-pop band, itâs almost certainly BTS. The group of supremely handsome men âchecks off all the boxes,â as Benjamin puts it. Their album sales across international music markets speak for themselves: BTS earned the No. 8 position on Billboardâs 2018 Top Artist chart (which includes American acts like Taylor Swift). In South Korea, they took home not just the best-selling album of the year, but also the runner-up, selling 2.2 million and 1.8 million copies of Love Yourself: Answer and Love Yourself: Tear, respectively. Theyâve also collaborated with the likes of Desiigner (âMIC Drop,â No. 1 among K-pop acts on Billboardâs World Digital Songs chart) and Nicki Minaj (âIdol,â No. 3). In addition to extreme Japanese fandom, their American devotion is unreal: According to secondary ticket marketplace TicketCity, the most expensive ticket to one of the concerts on their new world tour sold for an astounding $3,849.38â"for a show in Chicagoâ"and on average tickets sold for $823, making them a pricier item than Taylor Swiftâs Reputation tour. But those are only a few of the components adding up to BTSâ undeniable superstardom. Endorsements have been flooding in. Alongside a sold-out Puma collaboration, the group has a partnership with Hyundai. The automaker has pushed BTS far beyond Asia, tapping them as global brand ambassadors for its new Palisade SUV, with a heartwarming ad about family. Hyundai has reportedly been struggling to keep up with demand for the car as a result. This kind of multinational promotion matters because âthereâs more opportunity not just in terms of initial payment for signing on, but also the amount of income on a larger global scale,â Benjamin concludes. Needless to say, BTS isnât going anywhere.

Jump Up A Level In Your Career - Work It Daily
Jump Up A Level In Your Career - Work It Daily Want to jump up a level in your career? You're not the only one. Related: 7 Sacrifices You Need To Make To Advance Your Career A reader sent me the following question: Dear YII, I graduated in 2009, and am currently working as a development assistant at a small TV production company in the LA area. Iâm writing you because Iâm looking to make that big âJUMPâ in my career to a major network or a bigger production company. I have tons of experience and am very good at what I do. Iâm currently making $12.50 an hour and am extremely frustrated (not with the position, but the money). I guess my question is, how do I do this? - D Hereâs The Deal Many, many, MANY people start out in entertainment making a pittance and being otherwise abused, either intentionally or not. Some do unpaid post-graduate internships on movie sets and at small production companies hoping for their big break. Some, such as your self, work in âadministrativeâ positions doing far more than your salary and title indicates. The Good News This is a tried and true path to moving up in the industry and, congratulations, you have broken in to your chosen field! Check that step off your list! The Bad News It might take a while to make the jump up. Even poorly-paying jobs like yours are sought-after by the thousands wanting to break in behind you and moving up a notch is even more challenging. Also, you have been at your position less than a year so you will probably have to tough it out at least a few more months, but you can start positioning yourself for the leap now. The Strategy Focus on doing the things in your job that either qualify you to move up in your current job or help you land your next job, such as networking and building relationships (both to increase your worth inside this job and to locate your next job), knowing the projects and material and key players out there, getting talent attached to your bossâs projects, creating show bibles, etc. Do the administrative part of your job only well enough so you donât risk getting fired. (Being great at admin wonât get you to the next level, it will only get you more admin work and your boss will be hesitant to let his âstellar assistantâ move up.) And Donât Forget Have a current resume ready to go at all times that markets you for your next move. Focus on highlighting victories in the above areas, not the day-to-day admin. Donât be hesitant to tell people you are looking for your next step and to submit yourself for open jobs. (If it gets back to your boss, you will say you need more money and you want an opportunity to move up. He or she will understand and may even give you the chance rather than risk losing you.) The Bottom Line This is advice you can use throughout your career each time you are ready to move up. Start doing the job above you. Itâs the quickest, surest way to success in any field.
